viBe Theater
Experience is a performing-arts education organization
that provides a safe, creative space for under-served young
women to share their stories and use their voices to build and
transform themselves and their community.
viBe Theater Experience empowers teenage girls by engaging and
inspiring them to create, rehearse, design, publish and perform
personal and truthful collaborative theater pieces. We build
creative literacy skills that challenge girls to self-reflect
and develop a creative voice while encouraging trust, self-confidence
and mutual respect.
We partner with public schools, arts and community based organizations
to ensure the greatest dimension of diversity in our participants
and supporters. We seek new and young audiences from the community,
because we are cultivating new voices as well as new listeners.
viBe Theater Experience is a solution to the dilemma of decreased
access to creative and positive outlets for New York City 's
young women.
Since our start in Spring 2002, viBe
has:
• provided free, professional writing, dancing, acting, directing and songmaking programs to more than 100 teenage girls in New York City.
•produced over 35 full-length theater and music performances, all free to the public
• entertained and inspired over 4,500 audience members in a community that might not otherwise be exposed to theater.
• recorded 4 CDs of original music written and sung by viBeGirls
• compiled and published the original writings of more than 150 girls
• published (in partnership with Girls Write Now) 6 arts-based, resource guidebooks that explore issues important to teenage girls such as Sex, Body Image, Spirituality, Food & Nutrition, Social Justice and Money/Finance
• empowered teenage girls as leaders, directors and facilitators to speak out at conferences and universities nationally to advocate for the need for creative experiences and opportunities for young women!
