viBe on the Road: "Through Our Eyes: A Black Girls Perspective"
The cast and director of "Through Our Eyes: A Black Girl's Perspective" traveled to Atlanta Georgia for a residency with Humanity in Action, where they were invited to perform their show! "Through Our Eyes: A Black Girl's Perspective," written and performed by Angie, Kaitlyn, Taliyah and Yanique from our viBeStages After-School program is an imagining of a day in the life of the "Leesburg Girls," 12 African-American girls aged 13-15 who, in 1963, were detained in a stockade in Leesburg, GA, with no contact with their families for two months, without ever being formally charged.
As a warm-up for their Atlanta performance, our young artists performed their show for an enthusiastic (and packed!) audience from the Young Women's Leadership Network on Monday, July 23 at JACK in Brooklyn. On Thursday, July 26th, the group joined the 2018 John Lewis Humanity In Action Fellows and traveled to Leesburg, Georgia, to visit the site of the stockade where the "Leesburg Girls" were detained in 1963. On Friday, July 27th, viBeStages Director and 2017 John Lewis Fellow Ianne Fields Stewart led a workshop for the 2108 Fellows. The workshop gave participants an opportunity to work in small groups to create small performances using viBe's unique pedagogy!"Through Our Eyes" was then performed at the for an audience that included the 2018 John Lewis Fellows, viBe friends/family, and Dr. Shirley Green-Reese, a Leesburg Stockade Survivor, who gave a presentation and led the talk-back discussion after the play.
“Are You Trippin?” was viBeCompany’s brand new original play, on June 10th at BRIC Arts Media (FREE SHOW at The Stoop) at 2 p.m. and June 14th JACK at 7:30 p.m. (tickets: $15.00)
“Are You Trippin’?” is about the mental and physical ‘Trippin’ of four unlikely travelers in search of joy in these trauma-inducing times.
"Scratches in the Water Help Clear the Air" was a brand new viBeSolos show, written and performed by the Ladies of viBeSolos 2018. "Scratches in the Water..." is an exploration of the journey to womanhood; coming of age, coming into one's own strength, and coming to question the world around you.
Check out the viBeSolos 2018 cast, as their powerfully written solo performances, music, movement, and poetry "scratch the surface," in order to, "clear the air."
